MISSION VIEJO

Championship Game

Santa Margarita 2, Damien 0
Damien came out with one plan, to play defense. Santa Margarita, however, has too much offense.

The Eagles became the first Orange County team to win the West Coast Classic/California Cup tournament by beating the Spartans, 2-0, Saturday at Irvine Valley College. The game started about 25 minutes later than scheduled due to the field condition created by last night's rain, but a muddy field didn't dampen the Eagles' scoring opportunities.

Damien (7-7-2) began the game in a defensive formation, a 3-5-1 that looked more like a 9-1 -- basically the Spartans only had one forward for most of the first hald. It was understandable given the high octane offense Santa Margarita (9-1-3) posses. But the Eagles were able to break the Spartans' defense in the 17th minute on a corner kick.

After attempting a cross to the near poster on an earlier corner kick, Austin McAnena sent a cross to the far post. With Damien players going forward, team captain Roger Downes went backward and headed the ball to Casey Wooten in the middle of the box. Wooten smartly beat Richard Duran to give Santa Margarita the early lead.

"That was big," said Santa Margarita coach Curt Bauer. "When we went out we said we wanted to defend the muddy end in the first half, we we're just trying to keep a shutout in the first half and then to go up 1-0…I felt really good about our chances at that point."

Damien coach Juan Fresquez probably felt like he had been punched in the gut..

"That goal… it was hard for us to come back from," Damien Coach Juan Fresquez said. "When you have a talented team, a well coached team (like Santa Margarita), it becomes really hard."

Shortly after the goal, Downes, a defender who's right footed, almost put the Eagles up 2-0 when he blasted a shot with his left foot to the bottom right corner. Fortunately for Damien Duran dived in time and kept the Spartans in it.

"Their goalkeeper was the MVP of the game for them, he was amazing," Bauer said of Duran, who made numerous stops and played a tremendous game despite the goals allowed.

The score stayed the same at halftime and for the second half Damien changed their formation, they had two forward and what appeared to be an attacking midfielder at the start.

But 11 minutes into the second half Santa Margarita struck again, this time they just got lucky. Eagles' midfielder Joe Manna created the play down the far sideline by making run and then sending a cross into the box. Duran got to the ball before it got to forward Mike Munoz. Duran, however, fumbled the ball as was about ready to clear it and Munoz simply tapped it into the empty net.

The goal was Munoz' 10th in 10 games played this season. The Cal-bound senior scored 20 last year.

Things deteriorated, on and off the field, at the end but nothing beyond the harder-than-usual tackle and a parent shouting at another parent or a referee.

Both teams now set their sights on league play.

Damien will travel to Glendora to start Sierra League action and Santa Margarita will host Servite to kickoff the Trinity League. Both games are on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

MISSION VIEJO

Semifinals

Damien 1, Canoga Park 0

Fortuitous bounce or not, Damien put away its chances while Canoga Park did not.

Damien beat Canoga Park, 1-0, in the semifinals of the West Coast Classic/California Cup tournament at Irvine Valley College. They'll play Santa Margarita, which beat Carlsbad La Costa Canyon, 5-0, in the other semifinal game, Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Spartans (5-6-2) jumped out to a quick lead on a goal by Kenneth Leslie about five minutes into the game. Leslie got the ball inside the penalty box after a Damien player headed the ball up and landed it in front of the senior forward, who sharply put the ball in the back of the net.

The Hunters (6-4) had their chances to tie the game, especially late in the game when Carlos Gonzalez, the team's leading goal scorer, found himself one-on-one with keeper Richard Duran. Gonzalez everything right, except score the goal. Instead the ball just barely went wide of the keeper's right post.

The tournament's championship game between Damien and Santa Margarita is a rematch of the CIF-SS 2005-06 Division I championship game that ended in a draw. A draw is not an option this time around. If the game ends in a draw, the match will go into overtime and then penalty kicks if needed.

Santa Margarita coach Curt Bauer said he hadn't seen Damien play at all this year. Not one minute, he said.

"I don't need to. I know Damien plays tough," he said.

Damien coach Juan Fresquez expect the Eagles to be loaded with talent as usually. But added that beating an equally-talented Canoga Park side is only going to help his team heading into the finals.

"We had a rocky start, very unlike Damien. Normally we 5, 6, 10-0 or 11-0, but this year we had out problems. At one point we were 1-6," Fresquez said. "So slowly we are coming back and to beat a team that good (speaking of Canoga Park)...it has to be a confidence builder."

WEST COAST CLASSIC

Pool Play

Canoga Park 1, Canyon Country Canyon 0
Freshman Christopher Lopez stepped out, and up, in a huge way for the Hunters in the last day of pool play of the West Coast Classic tournament Thursday at Irvine Valley College.

Canoga coach Jake Gwin stated prior to the start of the season that it would be best if people began to remember Lopez's name. The tween showed why on Thursday.

Lopez, 14, scored the game's only goal early in the first half on a terrific free kick goal that perfectly found the upper right corner of the goal post. It was his second goal of the season and it would be all the scoring the Hunters would need as they beat Canyon Country Canyon, 1-0.

Canoga Park (6-3), last year's West Coast Classic champions, clinched a spot in the semifinal and will play Damien (4-6-2) at noon Friday. The meeting is a rematch of a game from last year that ended in a tie -- it was the only blemish in Canoga Park's otherwise perfect 24-0-1 record.

The Hunters's season got off to a slow as nine new starters struggled to find their way. But Canoga Park, which scored five goals and didn't allow one in three game during pool play, has picked up it's play of late. Gwin, however, is hesitant to say that his team has found it stride.

"I'm still not happy with the way we're playing," he said. "We haven't hit our stride at all."

The emergence of Lopez, though, shows that the Hunters are progressing.

Lopez, usually a starter on the left side of the midfield, began in the center of the field as Gwin rested most of his starters. Gwin envisions Lopez being a prototypical playmaker (or what's known as a No. 10 in soccer terms), and it was easy to see why on Thursday, but with Carlos Gonzalez, the team's leading goal scorer, and Omar De La Piedra, one of the few returners from last year's team, it will be hard for Lopez to see many minutes at that position.

Canyon's coach Khris Savage said the shot should have been recorded by someone and showed over and over. It was that good, Savage said.

"He (Lopez) has a very powerful shot," said Savage, who pointed out that he's keeper was caught flat footed on the play, but it's hard to imagine anyone at this level stopping that shot. "Upper 90's? Wow."

Might want to remember the name, Gwin said again after the game.

"He'll be something special," he added.

Christoper Lopez. Remember it.

The other semifinal, which will be played at noon as well, will be between Santa Margarita (Group A winner) and Carlsbad La Costa Canyon (Group D winner). The championship game is schedule to be played at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Damien 0, Norco 0
The draw allowed Damien (4-6-2) to finish pool play 2-0-1 and in first of Group B. The Spartans will play Canoga Park (6-3), last year's tournament champion, in the semifinals at noon on Friday.

Santa Margarita 2, Esperanza 0
Mike Munoz scored twice and Sean Linn had a pair of saves for Santa Margarita (7-1-3), which advances to Friday's semifinals.
