TOURNAMENTS

MATER DEI INVITATIONAL

Long Beach Wilson 1, Mater Dei 0
Long Beach Wilson's girls' soccer program had never won one major tournament, let alone two; those were the words of Wilson coach Jason Kirkwood after the Bruins defeated Mater Dei to claim their second tournament in as many weeks.

Wilson rode a first half goal by Emily Dillon, a strong defense and great goalkeeping by Lacey Heck to a 1-0 victory against the Monarchs Monday in the finals of the Mater Dei Premier Invitational Tournament at Mater Dei High School.

"Long Beach is an up and coming program, we've only been invited to the big, big tournaments the last four or five years," Kirkwood said. "We've won some other smaller tournaments, but out of the three major ones â Aliso, Mater Dei and Excalibur â this is the first year we've won not only one, but two in a row."

The Bruins (9-0-2) won the Aliso Cup last Monday by beating Buena, 2-0. Wilson plays two Moore league games this week and then begins the Excalibur Cup next week-- they'll play traditional girls soccer power Santa Margarita in the first round.

The Monarchs (5-3-6) won the MD Premier Invitational last year and used it as spring board for the season, which culminated with Mater Dei winning the Southern Section Division I championship.

Can Wilson do the same? Kirkwood hopes so, but he's not going to get ahead of himself. He's going to take it one game, one tournament at a time.

"It's cliche-ish but that's our goal," Kirkwood said. "We'll worry about the other stuff later." Midfielder Danielle Russell, who sets the tone defensively, was named tournament MVP.
