Torrey Pines was ranked No. 1 in the nation but loses on penalty kick in
first-round game of inaugural Southern California Regional in Division I.
The opening round of the inaugural Southern California Regional in boys' and
girls' soccer Tuesday was highlighted by two shocking upsets involving
Southland teams.
Thousand Oaks surprised Encinitas Torrey Pines, the top-ranked girls' team in the nation, 1-0, on a penalty kick goal by sophomore Michelle Cruz with three minutes left in their Division I quarterfinal. The Falcons (22-1-3), the top team in the StudentSportsSoccer.com rankings, had not lost since Feb. 16, 2006, while Thousand Oaks (21-4-2), though the Southern Section Division II champions, was seeded eighth in the 16-team field. At San Clemente, so sure was the announcer that Torrey Pines would prevail that after the fourth-seeded Tritons beat fifth-seeded Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 3-2, he said over the loudspeaker: "Come join us for semifinals on Thursday . . . most likely at Torrey Pines." Rather than heading to San Diego, however, San Clemente (23-4-6) will instead host Thousand Oaks at 5 p.m. Thursday. It's an all-Southern Section final four in the division, as the other semifinal matches second-seeded Long Beach Wilson (27-1-4) and sixth-seeded Lakewood Mayfair (27-2-4). Wilson and San Clemente, the section's Division I co-champions, are ranked Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in the nation by StudentSportsSoccer.com. The other major upset occurred when top-seeded Westlake Village Oaks Christian lost to eighth-seeded Avenal in overtime, 4-3, in a Division III boys' quarterfinal. The Lions (19-5-3) won the Southern Section Division V title on Saturday. The Buccaneers (18-3-7), the Central Section Division V champions, will travel to the Southland again on Thursday when they play at fifth-seeded Cudahy Elizabeth (10-8-3), the City Section small schools champion. The only team among the top four in this division to advance was third-seeded Los Angeles Salesian (19-1), which beat La Jolla Country Day, 1-0, on a penalty kick. The Mustangs will host seventh-seeded Inglewood Animo in the other semifinal. In other matches, Santa Monica beat Newbury Park, 2-1, in a Division I boys' contest that saw two red cards handed out. The Vikings (27-0-1), ranked No. 2 in the nation by StudentSportsSoccer.com, will host City Section champion Wilmington Banning without their starting goalkeeper, senior Alex Kovacs, who had 17 shutouts this season. Their backup is sophomore Michael Freedman. Santa Margarita and Coronado played physically during their Division II boys' match at San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's High. The Eagles won, 2-0, but realized how demanding the tournament will be. "And they are not going to get any easier, that's for sure," Santa Margarita Coach Curt Bauer said. "They are going to get tougher and tougher with each step."
