Mira Costa, Palos Verdes and Chadwick reached the semifinals of the
South Torrance Holiday Classic, but only Palos Verdes emerged and will
go to the final of the annual tournament.
Palos Verdes defeated Bay League rival Mira Costa, 1-0, Saturday and
will take on Notre Dame in the championship game at South Torrance High
next Saturday at 3 p.m.
Against Mira Costa, Jeannette Kassai scored off a corner kick by
Amanda Young in the 55th minute to give Palos Verdes (8-0) the win.
Earlier in the quarterfinals, the Sea Kings defeated Beverly Hills,
4-0. Kassai, Elizabeth Caparis, Haley Rosen and Lauren Stantley all
netted goals for Palos Verdes, which is hitting on all cylinders under
first-year coach Sean Lockhart.
"The team is playing to its strengths," Lockhart said.
"We have good, skilled players and everybody within the team is
starting to realize that and they are playing entertaining,
attack-minded soccer."
In the other semifinal, Notre Dame defeated Chadwick, 1-0. Chadwick
(6-1-1) started the day by defeating Peninsula, 0-0 (4-1 in penalty
kicks), in a quarterfinal. Sammy Hale had 21 saves for Chadwick in the
two games.
Mira Costa defeated Santa Monica, 1-0, in one quarterfinal, before
falling to Palos Verdes. Mira Costa will face Chadwick in the
third-place game on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Also in the South Torrance Holiday Classic . . .
South Torrance 1, Long Beach Poly 0: Lenna Lamas scored on a
free kick for South Torrance (3-2-1) in the consolation semifinals.
Alyssa Heely recorded 10 saves for South, which plays in a ninth-place
semifinal against Sonora on Saturday.
West Torrance 0, North Torrance 0 (West wins, 4-1, on penalty
kicks); West Torrance 3, Inglewood 0: Megan Cunningham scored two
goals for West (4-0-1) in the win over Inglewood (2-1-1).
Brittini Salmon had a combined six saves in West's two
consolation-game wins. West plays in a consolation semifinal against
Knight on Saturday at 8 a.m.
Granada Hills 2, Torrance 1: Janine Urrutia scored for
Torrance (3-3) in a consolation game.
In the El Segundo Tournament . . .
El Segundo 2, Palmdale 0: Natalie Martinez and Natalie Barbosa
scored goals as El Segundo took third place in its own tournament.
Bronwyn O'Neill made seven saves to record her fourth shutout. Jenna
Rich won the tournament director's award for being the most outstanding
player on El Segundo's team.
West Ranch 4, Palisades 0: Gina Tumasone, who sparked West
Ranch in the title game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player.
Boys soccer
David Winfrey and Keifer Greenlief scored for Mira Costa in its wins
in the first two rounds of the Long Beach Millikan Tournament.
Stephen Bateman had a combined five saves in the two games for Mira
Costa (4-2), which plays in the quarterfinals against Lynwood when the
tournament resumes Jan. 3.
In a nonleague game . . .
Mira Costa 10, Esperanza 8: Sivan Pardon had four goals and
Kendra Hendrick added three goals for host Mira Costa (4-3). Goalkeeper
Cory-Ann Pitts made six saves for the Mustangs.
